Popis produktu

Written to honour the life of the eponymous abolitionist and activist, ‘John Brown’ is the transcript of a speech delivered by Douglass in 1860. While some saw Brown as a radical and a criminal, Douglass saw his friend as a man prepared to sacrifice his life so that others might be free. Passionate and powerful, the speech not only extolls Brown’s virtues, but also highlights the political and social issues faced by African Americans at the time. ´John Brown´ is an important read for anyone with an interest in social justice and injustice. Frederick Douglass (1818-1995) was an American abolitionist and author. Born into slavery in Maryland, he was of African, European, and Native American descent. He was separated from his mother at a young age and lived with his grandmother until he was moved to another plantation. Frederick was taught his alphabet by the wife of one of his owners, a knowledge he passed on to other slaves. In 1838, he successfully escaped slavery by jumping on a north-bound train. After less than 24 hours, he was in New York and free. The same year, he married the woman that had inspired his run for freedom and started working actively as a social reformer, orator, statesman, and women’s rights defender. He remains most known today for his 1845 autobiography ""Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave."" saga egmont N new in stock ebook N N N N N N 124 CZK N N 784 N N N N N N N 2978 2 13227 19786 41738 john-brown-frederick-douglass Knihy knihy dc8be6f5d350cf6c7173d9732e64b21a2a14453f9086c6bae60973b423d9907e ae63c2f1cc16a6582ab77d559c4d0f89c1bdc326bb578838e7d3313c3597a1cf 95d73723135f7cb0f285e5315779c6c13f21c10726b0bcce21c052a049fa0bd5 N N 2026-05-19 05:52:11 124 0 689692292 Prometheus Illbound - André Gide https://www.tkqlhce.com/click-00cj_pid_token00-13717911?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.knihydobrovsky.cz%2Fe-kniha%2Fprometheus-illbound-689692292 https://www.knihydobrovsky.cz/thumbs/book-detail-fancy-box/mod_eshop/produkty/p/prometheus-illbound-9990003843524-5.jpg "The wealthy Zeus drops a handkerchief in the street, and whoever picks it up must give him the name and address of one other person. That person is then rewarded with untold riches, while the finder of the handkerchief receives a punch in the face. This novella, a work of refined intellectual imagination, is a satirical discussion of man’s search for individual values. ‘Prometheus Illbound’ will delight fans of Gide's other notable works, such as ´The Fruits of the Earth´ (1897) and ‘The Counterfeiters’ (1926). André Paul Guillaume Gide (1869 – 1951) was a renowned French author who won the 1947 Nobel Prize in Literature. Described as ""France's greatest contemporary man of letters"", Gide was known for his fiction and autobiographical works. He published over fifty books, including ´The Fruits of the Earth´ (1897), ‘Lafcadio’s Adventures’ (1914), ‘Strait is the Gate’ (1909), and the experimental ‘The Counterfeiters’ (1926). However, the Frenchman claimed ‘Corydon’ (1911), was his most important work. In it, he used evidence from naturalists, historians, poets, and philosophers to back up his belief that homosexuality was not ‘unnatural’, arguing it was more natural than exclusive heterosexuality, which he believed to be a union created by society.
