As part of their smear campaign against the unpopular author, they questioned his authenticity and spread the rumor that he had not participated in the First World War at all. During the Nazi book burnings in 1933, numerous copies of All Quiet on the Western Front were destroyed. The work gained further fame through the 1930 American film adaptation by Lewis Milestone, which won two Oscars. In 1979, Delbert Mann directed a television film under the same title. In 2022, director Edward Berger created the first German film adaptation of the book. At the 2023 Academy Awards, the film won four Oscars.
